2027: “The Whole North Has Decided to Join ADC Coalition” — Consultative Forum for Northern Politicians

The former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has announced that the entire Northern political bloc has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political vehicle ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Lawal, who chairs the National Political Consultative Group (North), made the announcement on Saturday during a press briefing at the conclusion of the group’s third expanded meeting held at the Abuja Continental Hotel’s Ladi Kwali Hall.

According to Lawal, the group, which initially operated as a consultative platform for Northern politicians, has now fully aligned with the ADC in a bid to confront the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the polls.

“The truth of the matter is that we started out as what we call a Consultative Forum for Northern politicians, but as the momentum was going on, it appears that the whole of the North has decided that they will join ADC,” Lawal said.

He further explained that the lines between the Consultative Forum and the ADC had effectively disappeared as Northern political leaders unanimously endorsed the party as their unified platform.

Lawal noted that representatives from all 19 Northern states were in agreement that President Bola Tinubu’s administration has failed to address key issues affecting the North — including insecurity, infrastructure decay, economic hardship, and social marginalisation.

“This government has no interest in solving problems confronting the North — be it infrastructure, economy, or security,” he said. “We have to take the ball in our hands and work towards achieving solutions to our problems.”

The NPCG chairman stressed that the North is now focused on electing a leader who genuinely prioritises the region’s interests and will work to reverse the decline in security and economic wellbeing.

“There’s everything designed to humble us, disintegrate us, and underdevelop us. But we are resolved to enlighten our people and garner the needed support to tackle these challenges,” he added.

Lawal also emphasized that the ADC remains committed to internal democracy, stating that party members would elect their representatives through open congresses and conventions.

Addressing doubts about the integrity of the 2027 electoral process, Lawal assured that the ADC is determined to ensure every vote counts.

“I don’t believe — and no one in ADC believes — that votes do not count. This time, votes will count. Whatever techniques or malicious activity they throw at us, we’ll counter it effectively,” he stated confidently.
