2027: Northern Plot to Unseat Tinubu Deepens as preferred presidential candidate unveiled

A new political movement appears to be gaining momentum in Northern Nigeria as campaign posters for former President Goodluck Jonathan were spotted in key locations across Kano State.

The development has heightened speculation about a potential bid to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

The posters, emblazoned with the slogan, “Team New Nigeria 2027: The Goodluck Nigeria Needs—Dr. Goodluck Jonathan,” were strategically placed at high-visibility areas, including the Gyadi-Gyadi/Zoo Road flyover, Kofar Nasarawa, and State Road.

Team New Nigeria Drives the Agenda

The posters are linked to Team New Nigeria (TNN), a nascent political movement advocating for transformative leadership and a departure from the current political order. TNN leader Modibbo Yakubu Farakwai revealed that the group has been mobilizing support nationwide, with a clear goal of challenging Tinubu’s government.

“Nigerians are hungry for change and yearning for a new party with new faces to drive that change,” Farakwai said during a press briefing in Kano. He emphasized that TNN seeks to overhaul Nigeria’s political culture, citing public dissatisfaction with Tinubu’s administration as a key motivator.

Farakwai disclosed that TNN has already established a harmonization committee in Kano and is in the process of registering as a political party with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The group has also laid the groundwork for a full-fledged political structure, including a party constitution, manifesto, and logo.

Mobilizing for 2027

According to Farakwai, TNN has mobilized over 26 million registered voters across the country, reflecting growing public interest in the movement’s message of reform. “We are engaging Nigerians through nationwide rallies to initiate a dialogue about the country’s future,” he stated.

Jonathan’s Stance Unclear

Despite the movement’s public endorsement of Goodluck Jonathan as its preferred presidential candidate, the former president’s position remains ambiguous. Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s leader from 2010 to 2015, has not made any public comments regarding the campaign or TNN’s activities.

Attempts to reach his spokesperson, Okechukwu Eze, for clarification were unsuccessful. This silence has only deepened intrigue, as Jonathan has faced similar situations in the past. In 2022, supporters controversially purchased presidential nomination forms for him under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move he later distanced himself from.

A Looming Political Shift?

The emergence of TNN and its backing of Jonathan come amid growing dissatisfaction with Tinubu’s government. While the movement’s ambitions are clear, questions remain about its ability to challenge the political establishment and secure widespread support.

As 2027 approaches, Nigeria’s political landscape is poised for significant shifts, with new players like TNN potentially redefining the nation’s electoral dynamics. Whether Jonathan will play a central role in this remains to be seen.
