2027 Elections Will Be “Dangerous and Chaotic” — Mahdi Shehu Warns

Prominent political commentator and activist, Mahdi Shehu, has issued a stark warning about the state of Nigeria’s democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the upcoming polls as “delicate, dicey, dark, dangerous, and chaotic.”

In a post shared on Sunday via X (formerly Twitter), Shehu predicted a turbulent and unpredictable political season, fueled by desperation, opportunism, and the unholy union of former political enemies now vying for power at all costs.

According to Shehu, Nigeria is on the brink of what could be one of the most ruthless political contests in its history.

He expressed concern over what he called “desperate alliances,” with political actors who once condemned each other now forming coalitions purely driven by ambition rather than ideology or service.

“When sworn enemies and political rivals come together — not in the spirit of reconciliation, but for the sole purpose of capturing power — the result can only be chaos,” he wrote.

The activist decried the return of what he described as “recycled leaders” — individuals who have had ample opportunity to improve the lives of Nigerians but instead seek to dominate the system again through “fair or foul means.”

“These are characters who failed in the past, now storming the arena again not to serve, but to loot what’s left. It’s a dangerous mix: differing histories, similar failures, and an endless thirst for control,” Shehu stated.

He likened the situation to a ticking political time bomb, warning that greed, vengeance, and the desire to cling to power at any cost may plunge the country into unprecedented political unrest.

“Many leaders are recycling themselves into power at train, light, hurricane, plane, or ship speeds — anything to stay relevant, no matter the cost,” he said.

Despite the grim forecast, Mahdi Shehu ended his commentary on a spiritual note, reminding Nigerians that divine will ultimately prevails over human desperation.

“No matter how chaotic the situation, no matter the desperation or darkness, the Almighty God has already decided who will be what, when, and how,” he concluded.
