2027 Elections: Special Envoy Charles Omini Warns Against Statements Capable of Triggering Violence

The International Human Rights Special Envoy, Ambassador Dr. Charles Omini, has urged Nigerians to be mindful of their utterances and actions as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

Omini made the call while urging politicians, political supporters, youths and other stakeholders to embrace responsible communication and avoid statements capable of inflaming tensions or threatening the peace and democratic stability of the country.

He said the 2027 elections should be seen as an opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy rather than create division, hostility and violence.

According to him, freedom of expression comes with responsibility, particularly in an era where political comments can spread rapidly through social media and other public platforms.

Omini warned that provocative statements, personal attacks, hate speech and inflammatory political rhetoric could create unnecessary tension and undermine the electoral process.

He therefore called on political actors and their supporters to focus on issues, policies and programmes that can improve the lives of Nigerians instead of engaging in activities capable of threatening peaceful coexistence.

The human rights envoy also urged young Nigerians to resist attempts by politicians or other individuals to use them to perpetrate violence during the election period.

He stressed that democracy can only thrive when citizens are free to express their opinions, support candidates of their choice and participate in elections without intimidation or fear.

Omini further appealed to Nigerians to respect opposing political views, noting that political differences should not become a reason for citizens to attack one another or undermine democratic institutions.

As political activities ahead of the 2027 elections intensify, he urged Nigerians to place the interest of the country above personal and political interests.

He maintained that protecting democracy is a collective responsibility and called on citizens to contribute positively to the electoral process through peaceful participation, responsible speech and respect for the rule of law.

“Guide your utterances. We won’t allow you to destroy democracy,” Omini warned, stressing that every Nigerian has a role to play in preserving the country’s democratic values.

He also called on political leaders, civil society organisations, security agencies, the media and citizens to work together to ensure that the 2027 general elections are conducted in an atmosphere of peace, tolerance and respect for  fundamental human rights.
