2027 Elections May Not Hold — Former PDP National Chairman Warns
Prince Uche Secondus, former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has expressed grave concerns about the future of Nigeria’s democracy, warning that the 2027 general elections may not hold.

He attributes this to what he describes as the All Progressives Congress’s (APC) continuous destruction of democratic principles in the country.
Secondus made these remarks in a statement issued on Tuesday, following the recently concluded governorship election in Edo State. His statement, signed by his Media Adviser, Ike Abonyi, criticizes the APC’s handling of the election, describing it as a clear sign that the ruling party is undermining Nigeria’s democracy. He accused the APC of orchestrating an agenda that could effectively render future elections meaningless.
“The APC has buried democracy in this country,” Secondus declared. He pointed to the results of the off-cycle elections in Imo, Kogi, and Edo States, describing them as fraught with “electoral fraud” and conducted with no regard for the rule of law or the will of the people.
The former PDP leader expressed particular dismay at the conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led by Mahmoud Yakubu, accusing it of failing to learn from the mistakes of the 2023 general election, which he claimed damaged the credibility of Nigeria’s democratic process.
Secondus also took aim at the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, accusing him of openly boasting about replicating what Secondus called the “Edo template” in future elections, including the upcoming contests in Ondo and Anambra States. According to Secondus, this statement reinforces his fears that the ruling party is pushing Nigeria toward a one-party state by silencing opposition voices.
“The beauty of democracy lies in opposing voices that check the ruling party,” Secondus said. “But the APC is bent on silencing these voices and misgoverning Nigeria.”
He further warned that if the outcome of the Edo election is allowed to stand, it would be a significant blow to the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system, casting doubt on whether any future elections, including the pivotal 2027 polls, could be conducted fairly.
Secondus condemned what he called the “manipulation” of the Edo election, highlighting instances of opposition harassment, arrests, and the alleged compromise of security agencies and electoral officials.
As Nigeria grapples with these accusations, Secondus urged the international community to take note of the country’s declining democratic standards. “The world is watching the disgrace we bring to this beautiful system of government, which other nations use to stabilize and develop their countries,” he lamented.
His comments come as tensions mount over the state of Nigeria’s democracy, with growing calls for electoral reform and increased accountability from INEC and the ruling party.
