2027: Coalition to Send Tinubu Back to Lagos Gathers Momentum as LND Joins Forces

The political coalition aiming to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election has received a major boost, following the decision by the League of Northern Democrats (LND) to join its ranks.

Umar Ardo, convener of the LND, made the announcement on Thursday after an expanded meeting of the group held in Abuja.

Ardo disclosed that the LND had resolved to become part of the growing coalition and would make a final decision on whether to merge with an existing political party or register a new one by May 30th.

Reading from the meeting’s communiqué, Ardo revealed that the LND resolved several key issues during the deliberations. Among them was the formal adoption of the league’s constitution and the confirmation of its leadership structure.

“We just finished our deliberation and we have resolved basically eight issues. First, we approve our constitution as an association of Northern Nigeria. We approve the leadership of the LND,” Ardo said.

One of the most consequential items on the agenda was the league’s strategy moving forward: whether to integrate into an existing political party or to float a new one to champion its cause. A final decision on this matter is expected on May 30.

To facilitate this process, two committees were established. The committee tasked with negotiating a merger with an existing party is chaired by former Cross River State Governor, Liyel Imoke. Meanwhile, a second committee, exploring the option of registering a new party, is headed by former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, with Ardo serving as secretary.

Political observers say the entry of LND, a prominent northern political bloc, could significantly alter the dynamics of the 2027 elections.

With growing dissent in various regions and factions, the coalition’s momentum signals mounting challenges for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Tinubu.

As the May 30 deadline approaches, all eyes are on the coalition’s next move — a decision that could reshape Nigeria’s political terrain in the coming years.
